Insulation!
Topic: Photos

Once upon a time, when I was in college, I was at a debate breakfast after a very late night at a debate party. Next to me sat Jeff Koisumi of Harvard's team, and Jeff was itchy. "Jeff," I asked, "Why are you scratching?" Jeff replied, "I slept in fiberglass last night." "Um...why?" I asked. He answered, "It looked comfortable."

I guess it looks comfortable, unless you know about fiberglass and its properties--it's made of, well, glass fibers. The fibers are really fine, and they will get under your skin.

Armed with this knowledge, Trip and I insulated the east wall of the kitchen today.

It took less than half the insulation I was anticipating, so we may save money (yeah!). And it was sooo easy! We got "no stapling" insulation, and it fit perfectly into the spaces between the studs, except in the places where the studs were too close. We learned to cut the fiberglass, and we also tucked it up under some old lathing, which we left for structural support. In a few odd places, some of the studs simply stopped in mid wall, so we figured the lathing might help to keep the wall from collapsing. Well, we can hope.

Anyway, we had an old piece of drywall which we recycled behind the dishwasher and sink. No, we have not hooked them up again yet, but hey! These things take time, and it's 89 degrees, and we have no A/C. Following numerous breaks, Trip helped move the cabinet and appliance into place just to size them up. Oh, and he installed the last of our new lighting fixtures (except for the hood light).

I still need to get a door moved.

Rubble, rubble, toil and trouble!

And here is a guy who lived in a bubble (in Lincoln Center...he's some kind of artist). Here's what the Washington Post had to say.

There is always something going on to give us an excuse to take a break!

Paul is a bit frightened by the sound of the shop vac.

But he soon gets into the swing of it.

The cabinets are here!

Trip rides with the boxes in the back. Pardon the goofy face...

The kitchen is now in the sunroom, in 54 boxes.

I did actually move the old radiator. The one in the other photo is its twin, on the other side of the room. Here's the removed one, along with the photo of "where it was" and a photo of the pipe that is still sticking out (and won't budge):
